Random CastsCongratulations to The Central Oregon Flyfishers, the Sunriver Anglers, the Central Oregon Llama Association, ODFW, and the USFS for another outstanding Kokanee Karnival Kids' Angling Clinic. Around 90 volunteers from these organizations devoted more than 600 hours of their time during the week of April 17-21 making approximately 300 kids feel very excited about fishing. I am so pleased with all the COF members who volunteered their time for this very worthwhile project. I continue to be amazed at how unselfish our members are with their time. I've always heard that if you want to determine where a person's interests really are - look at his/her calendar. Well, a lot of our members' interests must be in helping educate our kids, because their calendars are filled with hours doing just that. Oh yes! A great big Thank You goes to Art McEldowney for his untiring efforts as our Youth Education Committee Chair and for pulling off one of the most successful clinics ever. When Art decides to do something, he does it right. Art, thanks a million for all you're doing. When I communicated with you in this column last month, I was "chomping at the bits" to get into Davis Lake to try my luck on those Klamath strain rainbow trout. Well, I can report that I made it there just as soon as I could launch my boat. I can also report that the fish were very cooperative. Bob, Dave, Scott and I "wore them out" with our chironomid patterns. I have never seen the fish in Davis in as good shape and color, as well as aggressiveness, as they are this year. They wintered over in excellent shape. The water level is up some from this time last year, and the tules are not everywhere like they were last year at this same time. I hope that all of you have been out fishing somewhere by the time you read this. Fishing season is here! Let's all go out and enjoy it. Doyle Goolsby |

Welcome New COF MembersLet's give a good old COF welcome to a bunch of COF's new members:
All you new members don't forget to pick up your free copy of "Harry Teel's No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing Central & Southeastern Oregon" from Bill Lundy at our next monthly meeting. |
Program For MayOur May COF program speaker will be Ron Thompson of the Blackwater Company. Ron will provide a slide presentation and remarks on "Fly Fishing B. C.'s Blackwater River". He will discuss fishing the Blackwater River and its drainage system in north central British Columbia. If you aren't familiar with the Blackwater area, the warm Blackwater climate encourages both prolific rainbow trout populations and hatches of caddis, stonefly, mayfly, dragonfly and other aquatic insects. Dry fly fishing is the method of choice nearly all of the time. The Blackwater Company provides float trips on the lower Blackwater River and fly in trips on the upper reaches of the river. Some avid fly fishermen vow that the Blackwater drainage is the finest dry fly fishing region in the world. Come and find out for yourself! Also on our May program will be Art Israelson, River Access Director for the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. Art will give us an update on the status of the Oregon waterways legislation and litigation that COF supported last year - both in the Legislature and in the courts. Those of you interested in future access to our Oregon rivers should come and hear Art's message. |

Kamloopsby Gordon ChandlerAs most of you know some COF members are in the process of planing a fishing trip to the Kamloops area of British Columbia. All those interested in going on that trip should come early to the COF meeting on May 17. There will be a Kamloops planning session starting at 6:00pm that evening. We will be discussing what items to bring on the trip, meal planing, fly patterns, lakes we want to fish, etc. Please try to let me know if you are interested in this trip as early as possible. I would like to hear from everyone that is interested by the evening of the May COF meeting and have a final count no later than June 7.This is a very economical trip to do. The cost of the fishing license, camp fees, and meals are all quite cheap. The greatest expense is fuel. It is about a 12-hour drive from Bend to our campsite, and we will be making side trips to various lakes in the area while we are there. If you can get one or two people to carpool with then even the fuel cost will be very reasonable. I would estimate that someone driving by himself or herself could do this 8 to 10 day fishing trip for under $300 for everything (fuel, camp fee, fishing license, and food). Make note of these dates and times: Trip Planning meeting:For more information contact Gordon Chandler at: 383-2999 or by email - gordon@coinet.comWednesday May 17 at 6:00pmTrip to British Columbia |

The Meeting was called to order by President Doyle Goolsby at 7:00 P.M. Board Members present: Doyle Goolsby, Mark Reisinger, Bill Lundy, John Anderson, Paul Wilson, Tommie Speik, Dave McNall, Phil Hager. Others Attending: Bob Speik The Minutes of the April Board Meeting were approved as read. Mark Reisinger gave the Treasurers report noting that the budget is as expected at this time. However, the next months will show a large number of expenses compared to the first Quarter. The Water Watch Membership donation of $500, already approved in the 2000 budget, will be made at this time. Doyle made a motion, seconded by Dave McNall, to have a $250 donation made to Oregon Outdoor Women. The donation, requested by Art McEldowney, is for the June 10 and June 11, 2000 camp-out in LaPine State Park. Doyle reported that through the month of May 2000, discounts would be given to COF Members and to Gordon Chandler's Fly Fishing class participants by all the local Fly Fishing shops. Identification as a COF Member or as a class member would need to be shown to obtain the discount. Bob Speik reported on the success of the Conservation drive for volunteers at the April Meeting. Many volunteers signed up for the various up-coming projects and most of the volunteer slots for these popular projects were filled. Tommie Speik reported that Patty Bowers would like to have a summary of the results of the 1999 Conservation Projects printed in the Newsletter. Patty will send the information to Doyle. Tommie also said that a list of Members and addresses was given to Art to use for Kokanee Karnival purposes. Doyle will supply a monthly update of the new Members. Doyle reported on the success of the Kokanee Karnival Angling Clinic for Art McEldowney. Their suggestions for improvements, if any, will be gathered by May 15 and discussed with the teachers. The May 17th COF program will be a slide presentation by Ron Thompson of The Blackwater Company about fishing the Blackwater River and it's drainage in central British Columbia. Also Art Israelson, River Access Director for the Association of Northwest Steelheaders, will also be a speaker. Art will report on the status of waterway legislation and litigation supported by COF. Phil Hager reported the ongoing success of the Outings planned for this year. The last Outing was at the Metolius and there were about 10 or more that enjoyed the day. The next time Phil plans the get-together at East Lake and he says that the ramp is already clear of ice so that should not be a problem. Doyle has been researching companies from whom COF might purchase a table top display board for photographs of/by Members or Club happenings. Siegel Displays provides the best selection and Phil Hager made the motion for COF to purchase a particular display board for $259.95. The motion was seconded by Tommie Speik and approved unanimously. The Meeting adjourned at 8:35 P.M. Respectfully submitted by Tommie Speik, Secretary |
DreamersOften it is said that people should live each day as it comes - as a capsule insulated against past pain and future anxiety. For the fisherman this is a difficult philosophy to adopt. We are dreamers. Our sustenance is derived from memories of the past and visions of tomorrow. It is easy for us to let the inner mind wander back - back - back, to placid streams or crashing rivers; to campfires under star-flecked skies; to tight lines and broken leaders. Almost always it is these past experiences, fired with a large measure of optimism, that we use to conjure up impending adventures. For many of us, there is no time like early spring to stimulate our anglers dream cycle into high gear. Late winter edges farther and farther away and is supplanted by greener signs. Yellow skunks appear in the black muck, the dun shaded heron starts it's ritual flights, a cock pheasant crows from afar and pink petals dot the new green of salmonberry thickets. Pushed by the hurrying presence of our surroundings, winter's fancies become realities of spring and summer. Our waders are cool and wet, the oars are creaking and the wrist works out a long line. Seldom do our fancies exactly match the events. Dream fish are different from those in the net. No matter! Doing succeeds dreaming. Then the cycle repeats. The process sustains us through strife and hurt. Anglers are fortunate people. (by Pete Caverhill of the Osprey FlyFishers of Vancouver, BC for the FFF ClubWire Email NewsWire) |
